With the Paris Olympics right around the corner, the world will soon be cheering on medal-winning performers from across the globe. Here at Hitachi Vantara, we’re excited to share news of a Gold Medal of our own, awarded by EcoVadis, the world's most trusted, independent provider of business sustainability ratings.

This accolade underscores Hitachi Vantara's unwavering commitment to sustainable business practices, our holistic approach to environmental stewardship, and our leadership in the data infrastructure/IT sector. It is also indicative of the priority we place on monitoring our impact on the world around us and our efforts to set an example as a global sustainability innovator that delivers on its promises to both people and planet.

Beyond the medal itself, we’re equally proud our scores place us in the top 1% overall of companies in our category and the top 2% of all companies measured worldwide.

Understanding the EcoVadis Gold Medal

For those who may not be familiar, EcoVadis is a globally recognized leader in assessing corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability practices. To date, they’ve evaluated over 130K companies on 21 unique sustainability criteria across four core themes: Environment, Labor & Human Rights, Ethics and Sustainable Procurement.

gold-medalEvaluations use evidence-based analysis, factoring in a broad spectrum of inputs, including policies, actions and results. This is assessed in conjunction with the organization’s size, location and industry, and with a strong focus on transparency and continuous improvement.

It is worth noting that many global companies use EcoVadis’ insights in their supplier selection. For anyone that cares deeply about the future of our planet, it’s reassuring to know that accountability matters.

For us, such measurements are useful validations of the tremendous efforts made by our many teams across the globe to power good. At the same time, they point us in the direction of further improvements we can make to increase the positive impact we have on the world around us.

A Multifaceted Approach to Business Sustainability

In addition to our overall rating, we also landed in the top 1% in our category under the banner of Labor & Human Rights, the top 1% in terms of Sustainable Procurement and the top 2% under Environment.

A number of variables played into our strong scores, most notably, the launch of our inaugural Sustainability Report, showcasing our environmental, social and governance commitments, including:

  • Implementation of additional environmental and labor & human rights policies.
  • Quantitative objectives set for our environmental, social and governance (ESG) work, e.g., our commitment to GHG (greenhouse gas) management & energy consumption.

In addition, we have been able to demonstrate the impact of our sustainability innovation, through our storage product portfolio that delivers unmatched performance together with power usage reductions. As much as the impactful goals that we have set for ourselves, we believe that these innovations make us stand out as a sustainability leader and set the bar high for others in the tech sector to follow.

The results of the EcoVadis assessment are yet another proof point of the kind of leadership we’re proud to be able to provide.

Looking Ahead: Why Our Recognition Matters

Over a century ago, Hitachi’s founders pledged to “contribute to society through the development of superior, original technology and products.” Hitachi promotes the concept of the “double bottom-line,” where financial outcomes go hand-in-hand with positive impacts to society and the planet.

Today, we continue to honor these guiding principles. Our EcoVadis rating offers evidence that our rich corporate legacy continues to have a significant impact on our business and on industries and people across the globe.

Earlier this year, on the release of our Sustainability Report, Hitachi Vantara CEO Sheila Rohra stated that for us, sustainability is not a buzzword. Not a checkbox, but a feature – and a key pillar of our strategy moving forward. And we frequently hear from our customers and partners that sustainability is increasingly important to how they do business. For them, it is much more than a trend, it is a business priority.

At Hitachi Vantara, this could not be any clearer. We’re proud to set high standards and to lead by example so others within our industry might follow. And to drive results for our customers and partners through our data infrastructure solutions that deliver both financial benefit as well as industry-leading environmentally friendly outcomes.

Medal-winning performances start from a winning mindset. That’s what drives us as Hitachi Vantara – a passion to win together, for our customers and partners, and for our planet. Go Hitachi Vantara. Go world!
