Pentaho Helps NYC Department of Probation Police Its Data

October 26, 2011

Provides department with better visibility into performance of 35,000 convicted felons and 200 probation officers

October 26, 2011, — Pentaho Corporation, the business analytics company providing power for technologists and rapid insight for users, today announced that the New York City Department of Probation has deployed Pentaho Business Analytics to improve data management in its web-based case management system. With Pentaho, the NYC Department of Probation has achieved much better visibility into the performance of both the 35,000 individuals being supervised as well as the 200 probation officers overseeing them.

Data is the backbone to the NYC Department of Probation's IT operations with ready access to over 84 GB, including information on the background of the men, women and young people being supervised, the types of crimes that they have committed and their progress. While Excel datasheets proved ineffective and unable to scale and other traditional business intelligence solutions proved too costly, Pentaho offered the department the analytic capabilities it needed at an obtainable cost.

Anibal Sempertegui, director of information technology, software, New York City Department of Probation explained, "Because of Pentaho's open source business model, we can affordable to make it accessible throughout our department and use it to facilitate data integration with other city departments as well. Overall, the New York City Department of Probation has realized huge cost savings with Pentaho Business Analytics. We figure that we are paying 80 percent less than we would with a commercial business intelligence application for licensing, maintenance and support."

Now, through better data access and analytics using Pentaho Business Analytics, everyone – from department managers to case workers -- is able to gather and provide reports in minutes rather than days without costly IT support time. The NYC Department of Probation is able to make near real-time and more informed decisions, which helps them to live up to the department's motto of "restructuring lives" so that individuals on probation can have a better chance of getting back into their communities and building productive lives.

"The New York City Department of Probation is leveraging both the analytics and data integration strengths of Pentaho in order to improve its processes, make better policies and share data with other City departments," said Ian Fyfe, Chief Technology Evangelist, Pentaho Corporation. "The department's data warehousing initiative profoundly illustrates just how big an impact data management and analysis can have on human lives."
