Hitachi Vantara Goes for Gold Again with 1, 2, 3 ENERGY STAR Storage Sustainability Finish

Just two months ago my colleague Simon Ninan mentioned his excitement for the upcoming Paris Olympics in a story about Hitachi Vantara being awarded a Gold Medal by EcoVadis, the world’s most trusted, independent provider of business sustainability ratings. Today I’m proud to share news of an even more impressive award winning, carbon reducing, eco-friendly finish.

In what I believe to be an example of truly Olympian performance, three Hitachi Vantara Virtual Storage Platform One (VSP One) / Virtual Storage Platform (VSP) solutions placed FIRST, SECOND and THIRD in an evaluation by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR® rating system for energy efficient data storage solutions. The evaluation included all major global vendors participating in the All NVSS Disk Online 4 Category.

Based on measures of IOPS per Watt, or IOPS/W (more on this below), the results were astounding. Our top performing VSP One Block solution was virtually all alone at the finish line, clocking in at a tour de force 535 IOPS/W. Our two other VSP One and VSP solutions followed closely at 411 and 368.86. The highest performing model from any other provider was measured at 330, with the rest of the field descending quickly from there.

Reminded me of some of the amazing performances we all just witnessed at Paris 2024, with one particular breakaway cycling victory in mind.

Your Greenest Data Storage Option Just Got Even Greener

While the race to the energy efficient, carbon neutral future is far from over, these most recent ENERGY STAR results say a lot about where Hitachi Vantara stands relative to green storage infrastructure and data center energy consumption and sustainability. And more importantly, where we are going.

That’s because this recognition not only underscores Hitachi Vantara’s long-term commitment to sustainability and innovation in the data storage industry. It also proves we are not resting on our laurels. With  carbon emissions reductions up to 40% with every new VSP model launch, without compromising performance.

At Hitachi Vantara, when it comes to doing the right thing for the benefit of both customers and planet, “good enough” is never good enough. These new ENERGY STAR figures prove it, with dramatic improvement over our previous category leading results, which we shared in our first ever Hitachi Vantara Sustainability Report. And that was just in April of this year.

I don’t want to get too technical here, but that’s what an elite athlete might call “crushing it.”

IOPS/W Defined: More Storage, Less Energy

For anyone that isn’t familiar, IOPS refers to “input/output operations per second” – a standard unit of measure for the maximum number of reads/writes for a storage array. IOPS per Watt expands on that measure to include the rate of energy transfer over a unit of time.

It’s kind of like miles per gallon, or MPG, for a car. The higher the IOPS/W rating, the more storage performance you get from using the least amount of energy (or environmental impact) possible.

That makes these ratings a pretty impactful deal, to say the least.

A Simple Start to Reducing Your CO2 Footprint

Of course, there is no shortage of ways for businesses to work towards achieving their long-term corporate carbon reduction objectives. Renewables, alternative vehicles, supply chain, reducing waste… the list goes on. But one of the fastest, most immediate, truly game-changing initiatives an organization can make begins right in their own data center.

While the impact of any data center modernization initiative will vary – based on a host of operational and geographic factors that make every company unique – it can be significant for most any organization. In one instance, a customer saw CO2 reductions of up to 96%. While that may be an extreme, we have customers across a range of industries, e.g., BMW GroupGijima and Türk Telekom, that dramatically improved the energy efficiency, sustainability and operating costs of their products, services and operations.

Your Energy Efficient Sustainable Data Center Journey Starts Here

In her recent blog, my colleague and Hitachi Vantara CEO Sheila Rohra spoke of our ongoing commitment to driving sustainability across our product lines with high-performance storage solutions that minimize environmental impact. And that she’s seeing more interest than ever from customers and partners in how they can factor sustainability into their business. For them, she says, “sustainability is much more than a trend. It is a business priority.”

If you count yourselves among those progressive, innovative organizations, then the news of our eco-FIRST, SECOND and THIRD place ENERGY STAR finish is worth taking note of.

Then again, why stop at that? Give us a shout to talk and learn more.
